Corporate Highlight
Furniture Mall Of Texas, The North Austin Showroom Film. Living Rooms, Mattresses, And The Doors On IH-35.
Film by Adam Grumbo
Furniture Mall of Texas was a 100,000-square-foot furniture store in the former Target space at the Shops at Tech Ridge, 12901 North Interstate Highway 35, Building 3, Suite 300, Austin, Texas 78753. The Austin Chamber of Commerce placed it just north of Parmer Lane in North Austin.
Jeff and Jamie Winter, founders of Furniture Mall of Kansas, opened the Texas floor with Austin's Couch Potatoes. Austin Couch Potatoes co-owners Brian Morgan, Travis Morgan, and Dan Anthony brought a local sofa shop already known for Texas' Largest Sofa. CultureMap Austin later wrote that the trio first sketched the Texas mall in 2020 and tapped the Winters for the Kansas shopping model.
This corporate highlight is the North Austin floor as shoppers met it. The camera walks the living rooms, the mattress gallery, the design desks, and the glass doors that faced IH-35. The Vimeo cut on this page is that walk-through.
Our goal with FMOT is to turn furniture fear into fun.
Who Hired The Camera
Retailers hire a showroom film when the floor is the product. A short walk-through has to carry scale, departments, and the greeting at the door in one cut a homepage can hold.
The brief here was Furniture Mall of Texas as a working store: rooms dressed, mattresses on the bases, and the doors on the interstate. Orange and blue Now Open cards sit in the windows on camera, so the cut documents the store in that opening stretch.
Who Opened The Floor
The Austin store opened to shoppers on March 6, 2021 after delays from the COVID-19 pandemic and Winter Storm Uri in February 2021. A February 2021 notice had pointed at an earlier Saturday opening. Uri and the pandemic pushed the public date to March.
Jamie Winter told the Austin Chamber, "Our goal with FMOT is to turn furniture fear into fun." She said each mall was designed with an open, flowing floor so guests would wander from store to store inside the building, and that shoppers were guests: cookies, custard, beverages, and activities, with no pressure.
Brian Morgan told Austin Moms, "Kansas and Texas have a lot in common, we like BBQ and good furniture." He said FMOT was built as an effortless, no-pressure shopping experience. Austin Moms also wrote that Austin's Couch Potatoes brought a combined 85 years in the furniture business into the partnership. A February 2021 store notice described a commission-free floor.
A Family Store Older Than Austin
The Furniture Mall name is older than the Texas location. Furniture Mall's own history dates the Winter family business to 1933, when Ben and Eva Winter ran Howdy Come In, a roadside stop west of Emporia, Kansas, with homemade frozen custard. Howdy Cafe in the later malls was named for that welcome.
Trade coverage of the Kansas malls recounts that a hitchhiker carrying cabinet-making tools stopped at Howdy Come In. The Winters hired him to build a chifferobe for their son Bobby, then converted a dairy barn into Winter Furniture. Jeff Winter later told Furniture World that furniture was the piece of that Depression-era mix that lasted, along with the custard.
The first Furniture Mall opened in Topeka in 2013. The Texas store was the family's Austin chapter of that mall model.

Austin Home, in Summer 2021, called it a Texas-size shopping center with local goods and live music. Anna Mazurek wrote that the 100,000-square-foot floor greeted guests with complimentary cookies, custard, and coffee, and offered tricycles for adults and children to ride among 694 display rooms.
Austin Moms and the Austin Chamber listed the same departments. Mattress Headquarters held 85 mattresses. The Amish Collection held made-in-America solid wood dining sets, reclining chairs, and bedroom sets, with a design desk on site. Apartment Living staged three full-size lofts for small-space layouts. The Outlet sold pieces a guest could take the same day. Austin Grown was the Austin Couch Potatoes upholstery line, handmade in the Austin factory.
Austin Market hosted Central Texas makers. Chamber and Austin Moms named Austin Rug Co., Latin Roots Market, and Nole Creative among the confirmed makers, with room for ten. Austin Home also named Blow Candles. Howdy Cafe poured coffee from local roaster Johnny Beans and set complimentary custard and cookies in an indoor room and on a covered patio. The events stage held live music, movie nights, and workshops, with room for about 100 people. Austin Moms wrote that free music and events ran through the week.
What The Camera Held
On screen the black ring over the floor reads furniture mall of texas. A wood facade says Welcome Y'all. The glass lists 12901 N. IH-35, Building 3, Austin, TX 78753, with hours Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday noon to 6 p.m., plus TheFurnitureMall.com.
Inside, leather and blush velvet rooms sit on the same aisle. A vintage truck nose holds rolled rugs. The mattress walk shows Tempur-Pedic bases, a breeze display, and a REVEAL pressure-map station under an Austin Grown sign. Kirkwood Design fills a wall of fabric racks. Easy Pickin's marks the value design center. A yellow three-wheeler moves an aisle the way the store promised family tricycles would.
Later holds sit with a couple on a cream sofa, then a savings bit with cash on the coffee table. The stills in this feature are frames from that film.
What The Film Delivers
A retailer film has to make a hundred thousand square feet feel walkable. This cut keeps the ring over the floor, the IH-35 doors, the mattress gallery, and the living-room aisles in one piece a planner or a shop owner can send.
Showrooms, factories, and independent shops hire us for the same kind of floor film in Austin and Central Texas.
After The Texas Store
CultureMap Austin reported on April 9, 2024, that Furniture Mall of Texas was closing after three years. The store's Facebook page announced a store-closing sale on April 6. CultureMap quoted the shop's site saying furniture, mattresses, and the Amish lines would be marked 50 to 70 percent off. At that writing the Kansas and Missouri Furniture Mall locations in Topeka, Olathe, and Lee's Summit were still operating.
The highlight we made is the open store. The Now Open cards, the dressed rooms, and the host on the mattress floor are from the years the North Austin floor ran. The closing sale is a later public fact about the same address.
