Cultural Event Media For Powwows And Heritage Programs

A powwow is a gathering with dance, song, and community held by many Native American and First Nations communities. It is a public social and cultural celebration. Some days are competitive.

Grand Entry traditionally opens the arena with the Eagle Staff, flags, dancers, and host drums. The form has ancient roots. Communities keep it living through creativity and innovation today.

The Austin Powwow and Native American Heritage Festival is an annual, family-friendly Saturday open to the public. It is presented by the Native American Cultural Center, a local Austin nonprofit. The Center and press have often described it as among the largest single-day powwows in the country.

The organizer has published figures of 15,000 or more attendees, 300 or more dancers from many tribes and regions, and 100 or more Native food vendors, artists, and craftsmen. The Center has also cited hospitality and tourism impact of about $300,000 in historical About-page notes. The festival site is austinpowwow.net.

The Native American Cultural Center was formerly Great Promise for American Indians. Community members founded the group in 1991 after returning from the White House Conference on Native Americans, then organized and incorporated in 1992. The public mission is to preserve traditions, heritage, and culture; support the health and education of Native youth and families; educate the public; dispel myths; and sponsor the annual Austin Powwow.

Year-round work includes education and curriculum partnerships, community craft nights, and cultural connection, as the Center and Texas Parks and Wildlife coverage have described.
