Jimmy Pierce Designs is a custom hat shop in Central Texas. This brand film is an artistic look into the press, the felt, and the floor as a hat is made. Adam Grumbo's photography site lists it the same way: an artistic look into the custom hat designs.
Pierce's own site says he has been making hats for more than twenty-seven years, first under two master hatters, then in his own shop. Community Impact reported he has been making hats since 1998 and ran his own shop since 2004, going full time in July 2020. Texas Lifestyle Mag placed him among a very small set of custom hat makers in Central Texas and called him a ninth-generation Texan who studied theater design at Texas Christian University.
The same Community Impact piece says the craft started when Pierce, then a TCU freshman, walked into Peter Brothers Hats in Fort Worth looking for a hat to wear with a three-piece suit. Classic films still sit in the work. He named The Maltese Falcon as a favorite.
Each hat is hand crafted to suit the client.
Steam, Press, And A Week On The Bench
A custom order, as Community Impact described it, starts with a head measurement and a felt color from thirty-two options. The blank arrives unshaped. Steam and press take about thirty to forty-five minutes. Finishing the hat takes about a week. The full wait is about six weeks while materials come in. Texas Lifestyle Mag added the conformateur for measuring, then crown shape, feathers, and bands.

Pierce's site says he has been featured in magazines and newspapers, on Texas Country Reporter, and by That Englishman in Texas. Texas Lifestyle Mag reported a 2024 customer-appreciation date for twenty years of Jimmy Pierce Designs, a regular Rodeo Austin booth in the first week of March, and a weekly seat on the Drinking Texas radio show.
The film does not walk a booth or a radio desk. It stays with the maker and the tools. Makers hire us when the shop floor is the story and a short cut has to carry steam, press, and finish.
